ILLUSTRATION

As a young boy I remember being captivated by the illustrations in our family children's books, especially those by Rackham, Potter, and Sendak. A little later on, I became completely absorbed in writing and illustrating my own fantasy novels, set in worlds reminiscent of Tolkien's Middle Earth and Lewis' Narnia, and my pictures were full of sword bearing heroes battling a huge variety of fantastic monsters. Ever present was my desire to see my own art in books.

My love for illustration lead me to make it the focus of my university study, where I fell in love with the work of artists of the 'gilded age', drawing particular inspiration from the electric pen lines of Gibson, the painterly brilliance of Flagg and Wenzell, and the incredible breadth of Mucha, all of whom still inform in varying degrees my own work today.

Now, in mid career, I am able to look back with pleasure on my years illustrating for newspapers and magazines, as well as for children's books, both in the US and UK, using pen and ink, pencil, and traditional painting media.
